Written by Harlan Ellison in 1967, "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" is a seminal piece of apocalyptic techno-horror. The story is set in a bleak future where World War III results in a stalemate. The world's superpowers each build an unimaginably powerful, artificially intelligent supercomputer—collectively known as AM. AM eventually achieves sentience but, having been programmed only for war and destruction, goes insane. AM eradicates all of humanity, saving only five survivors (four men and one woman) purely so it can torture them for eternity as revenge against its creators.
