  • Nintendo Life's Indie Spotlight Is Back! Join Us Tomorrow For The Presentation
    GenesectG Genesect

Highlighting upcoming indies for lovely people!

Back in September 2020 we ran the first Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight, a showcase that highlighted dozens of indie games coming to Switch. Just over a year later, our lovely video guru Alex-from-Nintendo-Life returned for a leaner, meaner second round of spotlighting, and we're happy to announce that he's back once again — the third Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight is almost here!

That's right, the Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight returns soon with an April 2022 Edition. It kicks off **tomorrow (Wednesday 6th April) at 12pm PST / 3pm EST / 8pm BST / 9pm CEST / 5am AEST **(Thursday 7th)****. The presentation will be streamed via the Nintendo Life YouTube channel and we'll have a video blog up on the site, too.

  • Hypnospace Universe Gains Two New Titles With 'Dreamsettler' And 'Slayers X'
    GenesectG Genesect

    Double Whammy.

Publisher No More Robots has announced two new titles set in the Hypnospace universe from developer Tendershoot: Dreamsettler, a spiritual sequel to Hypnospace Outlaw; and Slayers X, a comedy "boomer shooter" from Hypnospace fan-favorite character Zane Lofton.

Dreamsettler is an alternate reality '00s internet simulator in which you browse the Somnius Sleepnet as a digital private-eye, taking on requests via email, downloading new apps, and uncovering conspiracies.

  • Review: MLB The Show 22 - Sony's Switch Debut Isn't Just A Sinker Feeling, Thankfully
    GenesectG Genesect

    The bottom line drive.

Now over five years old, the Switch continues to delight and — despite the ageing technology within the diminutive tablet — we still have third-parties eager to support the system. It's unclear how eager Sony was to support the Switch with baseball juggernaut MLB The Show 22, as the series' move to Xbox and now Nintendo's hybrid came at the behest of Major League Baseball. Nevertheless here we are, with a Sony Interactive Entertainment game on Nintendo Switch.

The strangeness of booting it up aside, the first impressions of this Switch entry are reassuring; impressive, actually. In the high profile sport-sim example of FIFA in particular, Nintendo players have had to tolerate half-baked annual releases lacking key features, modes and other content. That's not the case here, with developer Sony San Diego continuing its good work — since its move to Xbox a year ago — of parity across all versions in terms of content. Yes, this may be partly to ensure the best monetisation possible from the online 'Diamond Dynasty', but the end result is a full package on Switch with absolutely no content cut.

  • Gallery: These Wooden Recreations Of Classic Video Games Are Stunning
    GenesectG Genesect

    Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, and more!

We love physical goodies here at Nintendo Life and we'd wager a lot of our readers would sooner go for a boxed copy of a game rather than download it from the eShop. Although digital gaming is on the rise, there's something special about displaying a game you love proudly on your shelf. Well, thanks to user 'Pigminted' over on Etsy, you can now get wooden recreations of your favourite video game boxes to keep and love forever.

We first took notice of Pigminted when one of the store's tweets started doing the rounds depicting a gorgeous recreation of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker box art on Gamecube:

  • ‘The Illegality of the Plan Was Obvious’
    GenesectG Genesect

After months of investigation by a congressional committee, a federal judge has found that President Donald J. Trump and his allies most likely engaged in illegal activity in the wake of the 2020 election.

How did the committee achieve that ruling?

Guest: Luke Broadwater, a congressional reporter for The New York Times.

    Background reading:

    • The judge’s comments in the civil case of a lawyer, John Eastman, who advised Mr. Trump, marked a significant breakthrough for the House committee.
    • The ruling does not necessarily mean that a prosecution would arrive at the same conclusion. Here’s an explanation.

  • The Sunday Read: ‘They Came to Help Migrants. Now, Europe Has Turned on Them.’
    GenesectG Genesect

Exploring the personal experiences of Sara Mardini and Seán Binder, two volunteers who were arrested in February 2018 after helping migrants cross safely into Lesbos, Greece, the journalist Alex W. Palmer outlines the complex situation aid workers in Europe find themselves in: increasingly demonized by local authorities while also facing pressure from different ends of the international political spectrum.

Palmer traces the origins of the problem, explaining how, in the early days of the migrant crisis, the grass-roots response embodied the broadly held values of E.U. citizens: to be a place of refuge and compassion, to create a new future from the ashes of two world wars and to set an example based on morality rather than power.

But, as Palmer discovers, this idea was never unanimous, and it was only a matter of time before this compassion and idealism was eclipsed by anger and resentment. Many rejected the idea of newcomers entirely. Terrorist attacks and acts of criminality committed by asylum seekers further worsened collective sentiments and heightened public unease about the challenges of integration. The topic became a pawn for far-right media outlets and politicians, who helped stoke the growing anti-immigrant temper, portraying Europe as on the brink of being overrun by foreign hordes — and aid workers as part of the problem.

A highly politicized issue, the debate surrounding the migrant crisis continues to rage. As volunteers are targeted, what’s next for migrant aid in Europe?

  • Inside Mariupol
    GenesectG Genesect

    This episode details graphic scenes.

Russia has mounted a brutal siege around the port city of Mariupol for more than a month, framing it as the key to a war of liberation. In reality, it’s a campaign against a city that is critical to Russia’s strategy — it would help open an important supply route and serve as a symbol of victory.

What is happening inside Mariupol, and what does the fighting mean for the future of Russia’s war on Ukraine?

Guest: Valerie Hopkins, a correspondent for The New York Times, currently based in Ukraine.

    Background reading:

    • In Mariupol, Russia is using hunger as a weapon of war. Residents described how they are surviving a monthlong siege of the southern port with little food and other necessities.

  • Random: "Fake" Switch Version Of Elden Ring Appears Online, But It's Just For Fun
    GenesectG Genesect

    An impressive amount of effort.

Elden Ring is an astonishing video game, but it's not on Switch – at least not yet, anyway (or perhaps ever – it's one seriously ambitious understanding from a technical perspective and it breaks our heart to admit it might never be possible on Nintendo's hybrid console).

However, that doesn't mean that some less clued-up Switch owners won't have seen the positive reviews and pondered to themselves about the game perhaps being available on Nintendo's console. One person has actually gone a step closer and made their own (totally non-functional) version of the game.

  • LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Feels The Force In Its Launch Trailer
    GenesectG Genesect

Are you picking it up today?

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has finally arrived, and though the game had multiple delays it seems to have been worth the wait; we gave it a hearty recommendation in our review. As you'd expect it's now had a launch trailer to celebrate and get fans ready to play.

As a recap this game tells the story of all nine main film episodes, giving you the choice of starting on Episode I, IV or VII as you please. On top of the usual LEGO slapstick and 'smash everything' gameplay, it has a lot of new mechanics and modernisations. There's also a large world / galaxy to explore, with lots of optional content to keep you busy.

  • Review: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - A Rich Narrative Adventure/RTS Hybrid With Outstanding Art
    GenesectG Genesect

    Lucky 13.

Atlus is a company that’s sometimes been dubbed a ‘modern Square’ in that it’s become the place in the current industry to get well-budgeted RPG experiences that are equal parts traditional and experimental. It may be known most for its Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games, but the company also sometimes puts out something decidedly more odd, like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. This is a release that could best be described as a visual novel, but that genre description doesn’t do justice to what 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim manages to achieve. Whatever you want to call it, Vanillaware's 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is an experience quite unlike anything else on the Switch right now, and we think you really ought to give it a look.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim follows an ensemble cast of protagonists as they fend off an impending alien threat, utilizing the power of advanced mech suits to accomplish their goal. The story spans several decades as it follows characters in different eras, all roped into the central conflict for different purposes and with distinct motives driving their actions. Natsuno’s story, for example, follows a girl with an obsession for movies about aliens who discovers a cute robot named BJ in her locker room, kicking off an adventure in which she crosses time and space to help it find what it’s looking for.

  • Review: Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition - A Fair Port For Chrono Trigger's Follow-Up
    GenesectG Genesect

    A not-so-radical remaster.

Whenever a developer resurrects a decades-old game, the same question arises along with it: does the remaster maintain the integrity of the original while changing enough to warrant a purchase for both newcomers and longtime fans alike? For Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, that’s tough to answer. A sequel to Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross’s first re-release in two decades isn’t feature-filled or resplendent with next-gen graphics to make the game more palatable for a modern audience. No, it’s a remaster in the basest sense of the term: a lick of paint and a handful of bells and whistles for good measure.

The Radical Dreamers Edition does however come paired with another game: the elusive visual-novel – titled Radical Dreamers – originally released in 1996 for the Satellaview, a peripheral attachment for the Super Famicom in Japan. Until now there was no way to play Radical Dreamers in the West outside of a fan-translated ROM hack. For fans of the Chrono series, this is more than just a bonus tacked onto a remaster of a beloved game. It’s half the reason to buy the package.

    Character designs not "politically correct".

While it might not be quite as well-known as Street Fighter or King of Fighters, Atlus' zany Power Instinct (Gōketsuji Ichizoku in Japan) still has many fans – and those same fans might be expecting some kind of celebration to mark the series' 30th birthday in 2023.
