Gladius,the beast of night is the first Night Lord you face in game. the reward you receive from defeating him reads as follows.
"The wolf pup, born with three heads, was feared by its peers and driven out the wolf pack, but its will to live was strong indeed.
upon a rainswept night, it seized a man's sword with its great jaws but he showed no fear. he did not seek to harm the wolf but instead took it in his arms. it has remained at his side ever since, always carrying that very sword."
the "man" in this story very likely refers to Heolstor, the NightLord, the day he and his night arrived in the lands Gladius resided in and took him in, because Heolstor was rejected just the same as the wolf had been. I don't fully know the timeline of when each NightLord was made NightLord, however I like to imagine that gladius was the first, in a way he was like Heolstor's right hand.

I feel like gladius was designed similar to Cerberus, a three head wolf with control over flames, and I view his connection to Heolstor as cerberus's connection to hades.
