how do y'all get colored pencils to actually look nice??

i'm getting back into traditional art recently after doing it digitally for the longest time and colored pencils are such a pain, like i just cannot figure it out lol. i don't have any of those blending stumps rn and everything else i've tried to use to blend them don't work. i've been told to use q-tips, but that literally just scrapes the wax off, so ??
