Alright so this is a review of Jer's album BOTHERED/UNBOTHERED. About Jer, they make great music with relatable lyrics and punk themes with heavy ska horns decorating every song. And Jer is not a band, they are one person that goes by they/them. Just to clarify.
With Jer's album comes a real sense of duality, not just from the name, but from the songs themselves. Starting with BOTHERED, the song introduces Jer's usual themes of criticising the authoritarian U.S. government, and at the end of the song showcasing the first of many unique and raw samples, especially from cartoons. After the heavy punk themes of BOTHERED, the tone shifts towards slower songs meant to put the listener into a trance. And later after the song Decolonize Yr Mind, they keep the same slower tones of the previous songs but slowly build up to a triumphant finish. Finally, UNBOTHERED starts with a cacophony of various sounds before smoothing out to mirror the sophomore beats from BOTHERED, slowly moving into a triumphant, almost orchestral, final symphony, ending with a piano slowly fading out.
Overall the album is one of the greatest I've ever heard, a huge 9/10 ska masterpiece which is a reason to listen to modern ska punk, and to an extent all modern ska and punk. And Jer did it in only 10 songs.
