3DS Homebrew no sd card?

I have a friend who wants to homebrew their 3DS, but their 3DS SD card reader isn't working. He asked me for help, but I didn't think this was possible. Is there anyway to hack the 3DS without an SD card?

theoretically an SD to R4 cart reader may work but idk
maybe an ntr-boot setup (ppl have devised various versions just search ntr-boot on google) -
r4 is the game cart thing btw
