automatic emoji setting?

i feel like there should be a setting to optionally turn off the automatic emoji conversion (e.g: : ( becoming :( )
discord had this issue as well. i understand the appeal of automatic conversion, but perhaps an option for it would be nice?

it was off for a long time (originally requested by me) but since the poll update, it was reversed, would like to be able to use emoticons normally again
