I'd love to get some more formal requirements. Nintendo NSider forums (the first forums I used as a kid) used to have a rank called a "Sage", which had moderating permissions and was for members who met the below criteria:
...Not saying that it would be this exactly, but something along these lines was a really cool way to both get new mods and keep the peace around the forum. (For context, there was a category on NSider for posting game reviews, so that was kind of like a chance to demonstrate writing skills, in addition to the user's post history).

How much power do moderators have compared to admins, anyway?

i dont like to use the word power.. the roles of admin and mods are different
A forum moderator oversees the communication activity of an Internet forum. He monitors the interchange of contributors and makes decisions regarding content and the direction of threads. Moving discussions from one section to another to keep topics organized is also a common job for a forum moderator.
As an admin you have the cotrol a moderator has but an admin can have additionall levels of control... from one or all of these

@VGMoose I think if we had an essay it would prove dedication to the forum in general
The topic? I have no clue.@LTempral we (current mods+admins) should probably come up with actual criteria / a process, not just me vaguely suggesting essays be written. Althoooough, for topics, I'd imagine something like, maybe reviewing a website or discussing that site's use/role on Internet devices like the Switch.
Normally on a forum, you have global and category-specific moderators (eg. a Writing category mod) too.
This site is not really large enough for this to totally apply, but for instance, if you comment a lot of productive stuff in one category and "understand" what good vs bad threads/posts look like in that category, you're kind of fit to be "in charge" of it.
