an ants role is usually is based on what it ate in it's childhood states. if it is fed normal meals it becomes a worker. if it is fed a protein rich diet it becomes a soldier. if it is fed a nutrient rich diet and is favored at childhood stages it becomes a queen elate to eventual start it's own colony. if the egg is not fertilized it will become a male.
