  • A Covid in Africa
    GenesectG Genesect

As countries have struggled with disease and death throughout the coronavirus pandemic, one part of the world seems to have been mostly spared: central and western Africa.

South Africa was deeply affected by waves of the coronavirus, as were countries in East Africa like Kenya and Uganda. But nations in the center and west of the continent appear to have been largely spared.

What is behind these low case and death rates — and what does that tell us about the future of the pandemic?

Guest: Stephanie Nolen, a global health reporter for The New York Times.

Although 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has been available on other platforms for a few years now, Atlus is still concerned about spoilers in the lead-up to the Switch version's release next week. To combat this, it's enforcing streamer guidelines to ensure nobody ruins the surprise.

Here's the breakdown: Streamers will be required to warn viewers of spoilers in the title of their streams, so everyone is aware of this before clicking on a video. It also doesn't want any spoilers in the description or thumbnail images, either.

  • The Spirit And The Mouse, A "Ratatouille-Esque" Adventure, Scampers To Switch This Fall
    GenesectG Genesect

A great artist can come from anywhere.

As featured in today's Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight, publisher Armor Games Studios is bringing Alblune Games' The Spirit and the Mouse to Nintendo Switch in Fall 2022 — and it's looking like real treat if you developed a penchant for French rodents after watching Pixar's excellent Ratatouille.

Set in a small French village, the game from the two-person Canadian developer sees you take control of a mouse to explore the provincial setting to solve some light puzzles, spark up new relationships and — apparently — jump into buzzing electrical boxes?! Yes, it seems that the titular mouse here is able to withstand considerable more voltage than your average rodent and travel around by electrical wire. Hey, it's a video game!

  • Brewmaster Will Get Crafty On Switch Later This Year
    GenesectG Genesect

You don't even have to be 21 years old to play.

Our most recent Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight had a broad scope of game types, very much reflecting the varied delights that we get to enjoy on Nintendo Switch. One example was Auroch Digital's Brewmaster, with the subtitle 'Beer Brewing Simulator' rather neatly summarising its appeal.

Home brewing and microbrewers are a beloved part of the craft beer scene, and this game taps into that as you learn the skills to make varied and tasty beers. Even if you're not legally old enough to drink it, you can learn about how to make it, at least.

  • Gigapocalypse Will Bring 'Rampage'-Inspired Mayhem To Switch Soon
    GenesectG Genesect

Customising giant monsters sounds like a good time.

It's the year of Kaijū-inspired games, it seems, with developer Goody Gameworks (and publisher HeadUp) confirming in our Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight that Gigapocalypse is heading to Switch soon; it'll land on 2nd June.

Inspired by 'Rampage', you customise and care for a monster that then go on a rampage to 'destroy everything', ideally with as much style as possible. There'll also be boss fights and activities beyond stomping cities, and it's got a fantastic sense of style to backup the mayhem.

  • Danganronpa Meets Ikaruga In New 'Yurukill: The Calumniation Games' Trailer
    GenesectG Genesect

    No calumniations from us.

NIS America has released a brand new trailer for their absolutely bonkers-looking murder mystery shmup (yes, really) Yurukill: The Calumniation Games. Penned by famous manga writer Homura Kawamoto, the game sees a group of convicted detainees at the Yurukill land, a twisted amusement park headed up by the mysterious guide Binko. These detainees and their partners, called "Executioners", must solve puzzles in order to prove their innocence and escape the park.

It's impossible to overstate just how jam-packed this game looks. With a Danganronpa-esque killing game premise, tense puzzle sections straight out of the Zero Escape games, and bullet hell segments created by G.rev, veteran shmup developer of Border Down, Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX+, and Under Defeat HD, there's nothing else like it. We get a glimpse of those vertical shooter sections in the above trailer, too, and they look every bit as polished as we'd expect.

  • Feature: 10 3DS Retail Games That Might Be Cheaper To Buy Digitally While You Can
    GenesectG Genesect

Comparing digital to skyrocketing physical prices.

Some 3DS games are super cheap to buy physically, which makes sense considering the success of the system. There are others, however, which have seen their secondhand prices shoot up in recent years. It's easy enough to find copies of big-selling first-party titles at acceptable prices (even if that means playing near-enough original RRP for your Pokémons), but other games have really shot up in price in a relatively short space of time.

    • Feature: 29 Best 3DS eShop Games You Should Get Before They're Gone Forever

We've covered quite thoroughly the digital-only games we think are worth picking up before the 3DS, DSi and Wii U stores close up shop forever in March 2023, but we thought it was worth taking a brief look at the prices of retail games versus their digital counterparts. While it might seem counter-intuitive for lovers of physical media to resort to digital downloads — especially from a store which is soon closing its digital doors — physical prices will only increase once the digital version is no longer available. Pleasantly, it seems that Nintendo has reprinted various retail releases, so you should be able to find the most popular games for a while yet. Still, the clock is ticking, especially for the not-Kirbys and the not-Zeldas.

  • Rumour: Pokémon GO's Mega Evolution System May Be Getting Revamped
    GenesectG Genesect

    A much-needed evolution.

Pokémon GO hasn't been without its hiccups over the years despite its huge success. One of the more ongoing problems has been fans' issues with Mega Evolutions. Introduced back in 2020 and taken right from generation 6's Pokémon X and Y, this mechanic is a temporary evolution method that changes your Pocket Monster's appearance, stats, and sometimes even typing.

When it debuted in the mobile game, players were required to use Mega Energy to unlock the ability, but this only lasted four hours, so you also had to keep using it to maintain it beyond that. Unfortunately, this resource was handed out too infrequently so players quickly ran out. And while this has been fixed to some degree, you still need to go through Mega Raids and keep topped up on Mega Energy.
