  • New Quick Links on Switch Browser!
    VGMooseundefined VGMoose

When visiting this site on the switch, there are now some quick links underneath the Google and URL bars:

I'm hoping this is more convenient, although I'd like to have the BrowseDNS landing page be improved even further, instead of just taking you to the forum.

Also let me know if there's other links that I should put here!

If you plug in a USB keyboard, either via usbc or through the dock USB ports, it Just Works! Makes using the browser a lot easier, and combined with the dock + controller makes for a decent computer-like experience.

  • [Tutorial] Watching Videos on Google Drive
    VGMooseundefined VGMoose

Step 0: Upload videos on a phone or computer on drive.google.com, or get someone to share them with your Gmail account.

On your Switch: (Without the DNS enabled)

    1. Go to Album -> Choose any Photo or Video
    2. Press Sharing and Editing -> Post -> Choose a user if asked
    3. Choose Post to Twitter (Uncheck "Link Account")
3b. If you're already linked, unlink it first.
    4. In the top right, choose Sign Up for Twitter and wait for a bit.
4b. If you can't sign out and are already signed in, go to: System Settings -> down to System on the left -> down to Formatting Options -> Reset Cache
    5. Click Sign Up with Google but don't sign in yet!
    6. On this page, click Help in the bottom-right-ish
    7. Tap Sign In now in the top right and actually sign into your Google account
7b. Let it save your password to make this quicker in the future!
    8. Click your Google user icon in the top-right, and then Manage your Google Account
    9. Now tap the square with 9 gray dots next to your icon in the top-right
    10. This menu will appear for a few seconds, then disappear and act really glitchy. If you look at it quickly, you can see the Google Drive Icon appear right about in the bottom-middle of the menu.
    11. Click on the Google Drive Icon before it disappears.
11b. You can click around the page and go back and forwards to reset the menu timer.
    12. You're at Google Drive now! Either use Shared with Me on the left, or find the file in the main list.
    13. Click the three vertical dots next to the file you want to view, and then tap 👁 Preview at the top of the menu.
    14. Finally the video player will pop up and you can press the Play icon once or twice, after the player finishes loading

It's a lot of steps, especially the first time, but it fully works and requires no homebrew, and will allow you to watch as many Google Drive videos as your account can hold.

Keep in mind this is all using the Share applet from Album, not the DNS. In this applet you can only visit: Google, Twitter, and Facebook, but video works (unlike on the DNS).

yeah, the Switch has a few security features, including their browser not supporting JIT compilation, which is how a lot of web exploits work. It's also running webkit, which is the same underlying browser that most phones and computers use.

Also, Nintendo also has on their end a kill-switch: if they find out something in the browser is exploitable, they can force disable it until the next system update. In homebrew circles, this message is called the super nag (displays when trying to launch the browser):

    89beb05911bd177679ce0d19e341dcd7.png

In the past, this has been used to prevent PegaSwitch from working. It should also be noted though that even when this happened, there wasn't a virus that was maliciously targeting Switch web users, only homebrew users using it to hack their devices.

here's what PegaSwitch looks like when it activates (only works on older Switch firmwares):

Factory resetting is unlikely to help as it's a networking problem, not an issue with the Switch itself, so please don't be concerned. Check out the article I linked from Nintendo and try the troubleshooting steps for error code 2809-1028.

To reassure you, there is no known browser virus targeting the Switch in the last several years, and changing DNS settings is a supported and normal feature of many Internet-enabled devices. The Switch also has many security features to ensure that the software it runs will not be modified, and the browser itself receives modern security updates.

I suggest you set your DNS to 8.8.8.8 or try another Internet access hotspot so you can confirm to yourself that it isn't an issue with the Switch. If it's truly a networking glitch, it will probably resolve itself as time continues (the Nintendo article mentions this too).

To clarify one more time: The browser popping up is not an exploit or a hack, and is instead is an intended use case for logging into hotel and airplane wifi networks. The only difference is our DNS server redirects you to Google instead of an internal captive portal.

As for accessing Google on Switch, using a DNS override (like browsedns or switchbru dns) is the only option at this time. If that's now not working, make sure that the redirect is enabled at the lanechange URLs I provided. We want Nintendo to add a browser in the future though! Then we would not need to rely on networking configs to access the Internet.

There are some more troubleshooting steps you can do with a computer, outlined on our FAQ: https://faq.fortheusers.org/#troubleshooting-1 But in general, if it is an issue with your ISP (Internet Service Provider), you would either have to wait, or contact them. I have helped a user in the past check with their ISP and confirm that the ISP's DNS was improperly caching the browser, and they were able to issue a reset remotely.

You might also have luck changing your DNS settings directly on your router: https://www.avast.com/c-how-to-change-router-dns-settings If you'd like to talk through this more specifically with your model router, we can chat over DM.

We're still not sure why this happens sometimes. It seems to be related to a recent Switch update. It would be helpful if you could take notes when it happens, eg. what date and time of day it either does or doesn't work, what other games/apps were running on the switch recently (did it recently connect "normally" to the Internet?), etc.

I believe @Yanderemenhera and a few others are also occasionally having this problem. With note taking / theorizing, there's a good chance of figuring out what the rules are related to this error message being displayed. You can also try CaptiveDNS if you have a PC on the same network, but probably it will show the same error: https://github.com/browseDNS/CaptiveDNS

And then the only other advice I have is: try rebooting, try connecting normally, using Google DNS (8.8.8.8), launching some online apps and letting the Switch "connect"/sync normally. I suspect it's something that happens if the console hasn't "phoned home" in a while. Like if it needs to make sure that all online services still work before displaying the captive portal browser.

  • what are the dimensions for the banner
    VGMooseundefined VGMoose

Unfortunately there's no specific best size, as it's going to change depending on the width of the device that a user views it with.

This is called "responsive" web design, and often images like banners are made to look good at multiple resolutions to compensate.

For more info on how to test and preview different sizes, Chrome has a mode that allows you to try out some common screen dimensions: https://developer.chrome.com/docs/devtools/device-mode

Are you open to co-developing clearer guidance or even tweaks to the GDPR plugin to accommodate things like ex-user content purges?

Definitely. A first step will be to make easier tools for bulk purging before account deletion or via global mod / admin intervention. Also, it should be pointed out that this kind of tool would help permanently banned users as well, who are unable to log back in and do it themselves.

I'm still not sure where to draw the line for something like chat messages though. There could be an automatic clean up if all users leave a chat, for instance, as that data could no longer be accessed.

We would also need a way to verify authenticity of the deletion requests, as we don't want users to be able to social engineer and wipe data of different accounts. Maybe on deletion, an email, IP, or other secret phrase could be left to allow managing the data without an account.

Regarding a roadmap, that's something we should also have. @Raven does occasionally post a thread with what we're working on / upcoming features, but we should also have something like a Github board with priorities and visibility to the public for the implementation progress or feedback.

  • BrowseDNS - Privacy & Consent
    VGMooseundefined VGMoose

Hi, there's a lot to unpack here, and I'm going to try my best to respond as best as I can to the concerns raised. This is off the top of my head, and not an AI reply!

@Mozuku-Kun I appreciate your enthusiasm, but that answer does not accurately represent the way the platform works. It looks like it's lacking substance as well.

BrowseDNS forums are based on NodeBB, and as such, we inherit a lot of their account and data practices. Here is the main nodebb website: https://nodebb.org/

And here's the specific plugin that is used for most data "right to erasure" language: https://github.com/NodeBB/nodebb-plugin-gdpr

Firstly, regarding your first statement, it is news to me that user account uploads are not removed upon account deletion, and I will look into that directly. Please DM me with any information regarding specific content that you may have expected to have been removed in the past, and we can sort it out.

    For the questions:

A1: That line is referring to collecting user data for advertising purposes. Specifically, this would be by using cookies and Google Adsense. As of today, we are not running any ads due to it being too intrusive for Switch users, but we're actively looking into this still, as the platform has costs associated with running it. Here's a thread from the last time that ads were enabled.

Calling it 'for personalization purposes' isn't referring to algorithmic feeds, but instead is digital marketing lingo for: We will show you ads for products that you are probably interested in (by using cookies across the web), thus creating a "personalized" experience.

A2: Deleted with respect to user account data means fully deleted and gone, which is done to comply with GDPR. Individual posts and chats do have a deletion that is a flag in the database, and then can be further "purged" by moderators or admins. But when an account is removed, it's irrevocably removed.

There may be server logs associated with the account that persist up to a few weeks, but these are also regularly automatically purged and not stored longer than needed for basic site maintenance. We could more clearly define these potential loose ends. But for personal data that is requested to be deleted, it is a true hard delete (purge) with intentionally no ability to recover.

A3: Regarding chats and posts, this content is "published" and is not considered personal user data. This is the built-in behavior of NodeBB, but as I understand it, it's because data you share with others (in a chat for instance) is owned by both of you. It's not necessarily fair to the other person in the chat if you are able to revoke all records of your interactions.

I found the following resource online regarding specifically chat messages and GDPR: https://law.stackexchange.com/a/31028

To me, that suggests that if the chat message contains personal data that there is grounds for allowing us to allow the user to delete/purge it. As of this time however, we do not have a way to do this. You would have to go one by one through your posts/chats/uploads, or contact a mod or admin.

Combined with the fact that account deletion is permanent, that does leave an ex-user in a corner, as they're unable to log back in and delete the data yourself. If someone is reading this, and finds themselves in this scenario, please email gdpr@browsedns.net or message an administrator directly. We can absolutely help purge old content and are not trying to be in the business of unknowingly holding onto your published content.

A4: I'll look at those terms specifically and try to add clarity for them, but in general they're mostly going to be bound by whatever wording enables advertising (again, despite the site not having any at this moment). The specific user consent flow though mostly dictated by NodeBB GDPR defaults.

As the hosters of this service, we are ultimately the ones who hold the responsibility, but NodeBB is open source software, and if there are specific complaints beyond that, it might be helpful to sign up for an account on their site, and suggest potential changes from that direction: https://community.nodebb.org (or alternatively, let us/the administrative team here know if their site provides additional guarantees that we may be able to include on our end)

I hope this response addresses some concerns. Most of the BrowseDNS backend is open source, and it's not our intention to be misleading or mince words in this area. Besides hosting open-source projects, I also have professional work experience with GDPR, user data deletion, and user rights, but I'm not an expert. I do welcome you keeping us honest in this regard, for future improvements for the entire site and the rest of the user base.

  • Good editor for html?
    VGMooseundefined VGMoose

Actually, just tried it on the Switch, and the text area is all wonky. I am interested in finding a better coding editor and providing some web hosting to BDNS users too.

For example, vgmoose.bdns.dev but replacing vgmoose with your browsedns username. Kind of like Tumblr or neocities.

What websites are examples of "this text editor isn't annoying to use" on Switch? And is USB keyboard support good enough, or should it try and support the builtin one?

Also, I haven't tried it, but it's worth mentioning that the game FUZE4 looks like the ideal of "coding games on Switch".
