  • Making a proxy. Have a question.

If you're hitting an IP directly, it most likely means that someone is rehosting the webpage on your behalf, and likely has a list of "runners" at different IPs that will do this. It doesn't really mean anything else though, as all domains eventually translate to IPs anyway.

eg. http://45.55.112.11 will redirect to this domain, but we could've chosen to have it be a standalone web page with no domain name as well.

It would have to be a new website that behaves similarly to scratch optimized for Switch. Although Scratch is open source, so maybe it's possible to fix the issues on Switch and contribute the changes back to them. (source code)

I will just say that you should feel comfortable to vent, and that disqualification now does not mean disqualification forever. Especially as the mod team is still growing, we're trying to find the right balance on letting only so many mods in at a time.

EDIT: er, if this is about the other topics that were closed, if not, ignore me

  • What are some sites do you switch users mostly use?

@IaMwEiRd To clarify we have no affiliation with Nintendo! The DNS only displays the browser via a redirect.

Moderators of the forum do not have access to DNS queries made through the DNS server, but Server Admins could pull a list of hostnames if they were malicious. We are not storing these DNS resolution queries though, and aren't performing any MITM attacks either. For more on how DNS works, see: https://howdns.works

However, as with any third-party service, there is still an element of trust involved still in using it.

@lollapalooza Definitely, but want to also have a set of common defaults.

Like the "useful links" page here: https://dns.switchbru.com

Probably will need some switch-compatible games, and sites that work well on switch, like old reddit or ao3

@pwsincd They're asking about DNS search history, as in, within the hidden browser, and no DNS as a protocol does not allow us to view the specific pages that are fetched due to most sites using HTTPS. This can be confirmed by pushing Plus on the browser to see if the HTTPS certificate is enabled.

If a DNS server is untrustworthy, it can perform what's called a man-in-the-middle attack where it strips the HTTPS from the website to snoop on pages, but we don't do this!

@poyo for reddit, https://old.reddit.com still works, although it's a dated looking interface

Alright, that was easier than expected, so starting now, if you use 45.55.112.11 (the BrowseDNS IP) while browsing the internet, there should no longer be ads.

When visiting this site on the switch, there are now some quick links underneath the Google and URL bars:

I'm hoping this is more convenient, although I'd like to have the BrowseDNS landing page be improved even further, instead of just taking you to the forum.

Also let me know if there's other links that I should put here!

Okay! I'm going to add a bunch of known ad domains to be blocked on 45.55.112.11 (bdns US). I'll post here again when I do this, and I'd appreciate it if others could try it out and report back before I roll it out onto 45.55.142.122 (sbru) and 46.101.65.164 (bdns UK).

  • The Switch's browser is slow.
    VGMooseV VGMoose

When I make these changes to block ads on all webpages while using the DNS, it should help with some lag/slowness: https://browsedns.net/topic/5109/should-the-dns-block-ads-how-intrusive-are-ads-on-console-browsers

RE: tabs, way back in the day, there was a website called WiiTabs for the wii internet browser. It worked by loading websites in an iframe or adobe flash. Unfortunately, in the modern internet, many websites fully disable being embedded in a frame, however. It is still worth looking into though, probably in limited situations. The other unfortunate thing is you'd of course lose all your tabs after 20 min, unless there was some kind of IP-related preservation feature.

Technically it does give less, but don't let that stop you. For this forum, the Internet traffic from anonymous users (such as, users that google a technical issue and hit one of the topics here) should be enough to help offset the cost.

In the past, the DNS service itself had ads that were shown to Switch users, but Google started flagging the Switch browser agent as invalid traffic. So since then, the site has just been running out of pocket expenses.

I'm actually mostly okay with that (paying out of pocket, not the "invalid traffic" tagging...), but I am curious to see how much these ads make. So, that's why I think the group being a bit of an "open secret" if users don't want them is a good compromise.
