Fun fact! This is called a hypnic [censored]! We don't really know what causes it exactly, but one idea is that while you're falling asleep, and you muscles completely relax-although this is a normal part of falling asleep-your brain thinks that you're actually falling and causes the sudden spasms another one is that it might be your brain responding to dreaming as if it were actual stimuli and getting startled.
