I've noticed that people are really romanticizing depression nowadays, I don't think it's really being taken seriously enough as a legitimate illness that needs to be diagnosed before you can just throw labels about. I'm not going to lie, I sound awful saying this but, I think people like to claim they're 'depressed' for attention. If you are not medically diagnosed, then don't self diagnose yourself! This goes for literally any mental illness, we are NOT in our 'depression era' we're in our 'Respect mental illness era' I've seen people doing this all over youtube and even some people on here. I don't understand why people would see it as 'quirky' or some sort of aesthetic. Can we just be more considerate?

    Thank you

@Aries you say "acting" as if you assume people who put on sad songs or are legitimately sad, are people who fake it? are u a psychologist? do you know the person in question? i assume you don't if were making assumptions, respectfully id say get to know whoever, understand their conditions and what they went through. as everyone is different.

@StarryPeach Can you take it down a notch-? I think she means people say they are depressed and then she later finds out that they were just acting like they were. I know Aries well, she would respect someone if they said they had depression. Also, she was referring to bdns AND YouTube, I'm sure she saw multiple posts saying something along the lines of "in my depression era".

If you guys want my two cents on the situation, if you suffer from depression and dislike people who play pretend, then I think you should probably be for sure that they're playing pretend before you do anything. But if you aren't suffering or diagnosed, mind your own business, if the people who are being mocked don't care, you shouldn't start fights for no reason. But the issue with calling people pretenders without confirmation, is the fact that depression isn't something with set symptoms. One person might deflect or act over the top while the other might lose motivation and act more down, one person might sleep in, while the other might not sleep at all. Depression can come in MANY different ways and you CANNOT eyeball it, not even a psychologist can for sure call you depressed without questioning you or testing you in some way, so it is unfair to make a callout post when you yourself don't know the circumstances.

@NightmareWolfie Obviously I agree, and I would support someone if they said they had depression, but I would still ask if they are diagnosed. I think its just stupid how people say they are depressed when they really are not

@den Yeah well, everyone including those with depression naturally strive for some kind of gratification. If they're doing that they likely have other problems, and while I do agree with it being offensive, talking to a person in private about that is the proper way to handle it

@den The issue with what Aries did was saying "I sound awful saying this but, I think people like to claim they're 'depressed' for attention" as an accusation rather than calmly stating the topic

It was a communication issue that started your argument

It's not like i'm trying to be disrespectful towards people who actually suffer from it, it's just people don't take it seriously at all. My dad suffers from depression and the effects of it really take a toll on him mixed with the medicine. Therefore I get really annoyed when there's people online just casually pretending to be depressed, yes I don't know for certain but I can take a pretty good guess when it's kids on the internet trying to look cool by putting 'in my depression era again </3' that really pisses me off. Self diagnosed or not, people are taking their lives due to depression and we need to do a better job at taking it seriously
