Why I love Undertale.

Ever since I've been playing video games, (about 9 years considering I was 5 years old the first time I loaded into a Minecraft world, which I believe was my very first game), I have known about the existence of Undertale. Every Youtuber I watched had mentioned it at some point, calling it "one of the greatest games." There was hardly a time in my life that I didn't want to play the game. Of course, me being the child I was, I only checked the playstore...which is obviously not the place you find such a game. My first experience with Undertale was actually pretty recently, which I would estimate to be the middle of last May. Due to some lovely people at my school who know their way around filters, I managed to get my hands on a (pirated) digital copy of Undertale. I owe a lot to those kids, really. The second I opened the file, I instantly fell in love with everything about the game. The music, the characters, the style...all of it. I hadn't even scratched the surface. I knew right then that I needed to buy the game for myself so that I didn't have to rely on a poor quality school chromebook (that I'd no longer have in about a week) to take in the entire game...so I did exactly that! I bought Undertale for switch, and that was truly one of the only good financial desicions I have ever made. I now owned a copy of the game that changed the gaming industry forever. It was nearly summer, which meant I could spend as long as I wanted taking in every bit of the game there is to take in. It was just as good, if not BETTER than I'd ever imagined it to be. Normally media with a lot of hype around it isn't as good as people say it is...but trust me when I say it, Undertale is amazing. I love everything about it. I suppose should explain the story of Undertale (war flashbacks....) before getting into specifics. There was once a time where humans and monsters lived together in peace. One day, however.. war broke out between them. Humans won, and while they stayed out on the surface, monsters were banished deep underground. A magical barrier separates humans and monsters. Anything can get in..but nothing can get out without a human soul and a monster soul. One day, a human child falls into the underground. The son of the king and queen finds this child, and makes sure they are alright. Eventually, the human child becomes a part of the family...serving as a second child to the king and queen. They become a symbol of hope to the monsters in the underground. Hope that maybe one day..humans and monsters can live in peace once again some day. But... like all good things... it ended. The human child had one day become very ill. Then, as expected, the human died. Everyone in the underground was naturally devastated. The child's dying wish was to see the flowers in their village once again. The son of the king and queen absorbed their soul, and crossed the barrier. They carried the human's body into their village. The humans saw him holding the lifeless child and had only assumed the worst: he must have killed them. They attacked him, which ultimately resulted in his death. The king was furious, for him and his wife had lost two children in one day. He decided that from this point forward...he would take the souls of any human who falls into the underground. He was to take the lives of seven humans, absorb their souls to become god-like,and destroy the barrier for good. The queen, utterly disgusted with her husband, left him. Her idea was to wait for humans to fall into the underground, but instead of killing them like the king had intended, she was going to keep them safe and allow them to live with her. She would give them a new home. This plan, however, had ultimately failed. Every single human wanted to leave. They believed there was a way. For the first 6 humans... this did not work out. The king took their souls, and was now just waiting for one more. This is where YOU, the player, comes in!! You play as the final human needed! Your choices will determine the fate of..well.. everyone! There are multiple endings which I will get into very soon lol :) The soundtrack lives up to everything people say it does, using a variety of different moods and tones depending on what is happening in the game. Something interesting is that if you do a genocide route, (the route in the game where you show mercy to absolutely nobody), the music becomes slower and more somber than that in the other routes of the game...and sometimes, it's even eriely silent. As if it's telling the player ever so subtly that the lack of background noise is their fault. I'd say that the music really pulls everything together, and really influences the way the player feels throughout it all, and overall is such an amazing part of the game. The actual gameplay is another thing I adore. The combat system is very simple, but simple isn't to be confused with boring. In fact, I'd consider it quite engaging! There isn't a dull moment! There is a variety of different weapons and armor you can obtain throughout the game, which will change your attack and defence. Every encounter have their own unique attacks towards you, which will cause you to learn to dodge different things as opposed to the same attack over and over again. Now...fighting isn't your ONLY choice. This brings me to my next point :) Undertale has multiple endings, which I mentioned a bit earlier, around 93 if I'm not mistaken, but there are 3 main endings. What choices you make determine the fate of everything, and the ending that you will be met with. Genocide, which I mentioned earlier, is the ending you will get if you fight every single monster to the death, purposly triggering encounters and making sure nobody is left alive. This route is incredibly sad (...in my opinion), and also consists of two of the hardest boss fights I have ever come across. I also wouldn't recommend doing this on your first run because it will permanently ruin your ability to get a regular pacifist ending. You will always be met with souless pacifist. I will get to that in a moment. If you kill some monsters and spare others, it will result in an ending known as a neutral ending. The majority of the 93 different endings are some varient of neutral. This is basically just the default ending you'll end up with if you don't really commit to anything. Each and every varient is still really good. Now, allow me to explain my favourite ending. True pacifist. This ending is triggered by showing mercy to everyone. Every single monster. To understand this fully, I must move to my next point. The characters. I've been vey excited to talk about the characters. There are a few main ones. The king I mentioned earlier is Asgore, and the queen is Toriel. Their son is (or..was) named Asriel. The human child is called Chara by the fandom primarily, since it's really the "true name" but in game it is whatever name you chose at the beginning of the game, which you probably think you're naming the human you play as. But that is wrong. Their name is actually Frisk. Their are also characters such as.. (brace yourselves..) Sans (and the crowd goes WILD), as well as his brother Papyrus, Undyne (she's on my profile picture!!), Alphys, who is the royal scientist, her robot Mettaton who becomes a TV star to the monsters in the underground, and a lottttt more. Now! If you've seen Undertale content before, you may be curious about Flowey. Flowey the flower. Why didn't I mention Flowey? Well, in a way... I did! Remember the son of the king and the queen, Asriel? He IS Flowey, to put it simply. When he died, he took the form of a flower. Actually wait im bored of explaining all the lore. Not like anybody is going to read it anyways. (understandable)

I guess to summarize WHY I love Undertale, I think it's a beautiful game that fully immerses you in a world, and will genuinely give you feelings of hope, or determination, or many other real, genuine feelings. The world of Undertale is the world I yearn for, and by playing, I feel a little at peace. Putting myself in Frisk's shoes, making their decisions, walking through a world that they got to know...it made me feel like the character. I felt like I had some worth, even though the world "I" saved doesn't truly exist. I love Undertale, and I am never going to regret playing it.
