can anyone help me with math? I'm in algebra and I don't understand when a fraction (lets say 20x - 30 (30) over 5) has the parentheses but has also dividing from the fraction, can anyone help me understand this?
I dunno how to make my own problems yet so here's an example that probably cant be solved
30x + 2 (5) + 5x = ?
(under here is a line)
5 -
I just don't understand because its a perentheses which I was told goes and multiplies first, but we have been doing the dividing first which would make a weird number and sometimes decimal or negative that we cant like do anything with.... and so they said "do the opposite at first" but dividing and multiplying are opposites so if we do the opposite of each it'll just be the same.

I dunno what the question exactly is but everything in the parenthesis is solved first no matter what, so (2*(2/5)) [/ = fraction line] would have you doing (2 over 5 or 2/5) first then multiplying it by 2.
Also fractions are the same as division but with implicit parenthesis on both the top and the bottom, (18)/(22) is the same as:
1 * 8
2*2 -

2*2@UnpaidIntern thank you frfr im failing math and need to get this down and how to do the process before the quiz, this helped alot. i appriciate it

@xenth There's also PEMDAS for the Order of Operations:
P = Parenthesis
E = Exponents
MD = Multiplication Or Division (Left to Right Priority/Evaluation)
AS = Addition Or Subtraction (Left to Right Priority/Evalulation)I also need to correct myself on the (1 * 8)/(2 * 2) = 1 * 8 over 2 * 2 thing. It's more like ((1 * 8) / (2 * 2)) is the same as the fraction 1 * 8 over 2 * 2 since 4 * (1 * 8) / (2 * 2) is way different than 4 * (1 * 8 over 2 * 2) it wouldn't be able to be replaced 1 to 1 without parenthesis around the division as well.
Like ((1 * 8) / (2 * 2)) =
1 * 8
2 * 2
But (1 * 8) / (2 * 2) without surrounding parenthesis is not always exactly the same ordering-wise if replaced in the middle of a expression with other numbers:
4 * (1 * 8) / (2 * 2) is not the same expression if (1 * 8) / (2 * 2) was a fraction beforehand, since 4 * wasn't previously part of the top part of the fraction before.
