what did school teach you about malchom X?

i was talking to my bf abt all this stuff i recently learned abt Rosa Parks and Malchom X (outside of school unfortunately) that completely changed how i see them and the whole movement aswell as my relationship with the community, and i want to see if we were all taught the same thing!

so i was wondering what did you guys learn abt Malchom X at school?

well my school told me he did some type of crime and they put him in jail after that he started to be a civil rights activist

@_Izzy_ only "formal" education i've had is stuff for GED so unfortunately I did not learn of this in school

@itscookiebear i didnt learn abt his life before joining the movement in school so thats kinda cool, the crime was burglary, he had a rough upbringing and changed himself after converting to islam i think

My school didn't go super in depth, at most they mentioned he was arrested and became a civil rights activist and allat. They never mentioned anything about his relationship with the Nation of Islam and whatever. I also just may not have been paying attention, but I feel like it'd be something I'd remember

@w1ckedsticky1983 huh im pretty suprised bc i never learned abt his arrest until recently. Ngl it feels a bit silly to mention at all if your only gonna teach a few things about him, i feel like it kinda misses the point

like if your not gonna say much they could try to talk abt the more important stuff bc his arrest was a small part of his life (its not like he killed a man) the only thing rlly important abt it is that thats how he learned abt islam, but if they didnt mention that part why mention it at all?

the islam part is actually incredibly important because alot of his earlier views were influenced by his relationship with Elijah Muhammad and his organization, he was essentially his puppet until he was kicked out, then his views changed drastically (for the better in my opinion) and i interpret it as him starting to think for himself more
