                      Isagi Yoichi has a dilemma.

An insatiable thirst so entirely parasitic and grotesque. So utterly forbidden.

Isagi is a dhampir. A half-breed child conceived in the stomach of a human woman made possible by the likes of a vampire.

He had hoped his whole life that his body would decide to mature on the side of humanity, yet was afraid that it would choose the other side. The darker, filthier, monstrous one that hurt others and lived off of sickness.

Unfortunately, his hopes hadn't done him any good. His body had already decided the day his genome came into existence that it would betray him by maturing into exactly what he feared and nearly loathed.

And, conveniently, it does it when he's locked in a [censored] sports facility.

Fortunately, an icy looking soccer prodigy with the most beautiful eyes Isagi has ever seen seeks him out. Not because he wants to help him, but because he wants to destroy him at his best. And being at his best means that Isagi is well-fed.

                      Notes:
DISCLAIMER 1: I am writing this on a Nintendo Switch. When BDNS made web access available on the switch, Nintendo, as a form of protesting it, enforced a session time limit. So, my session closes every twenty minutes.

DISCLAIMER 2: The script execution on the switch can at sometimes be very slow and laggy.

Due to this, updates will take me a lot of time because I can only write at nighttime (due to strict parenting). I am sorry for this inconvenience, but there is nothing I can do about it. I hope you all will still read and enjoy. Thank you.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

                      Chapter 1: Salinity
                      Chapter Text

The wind whistles and whips past the tall pines. Isagi's hands are at rest beside him on the dampened wood of a park bench, the tips of his fingers curled inward just slightly against the bare cold.

                      And he listens. Just listens.

                      Needles. Swaying. Rubbing against eachother.

                      Shwoosh...

Falling to their demise, already brown from an early frost.

It's a sound that both tenses his body and relaxes his stress. Isagi's muscles instinctively tighten at the whirls of ferocious blades of cold air, but the corners of his mouth don't. They fall into rest. His eyelids drop and his lips flatten while he leans his head back. Nothing calms him like the ambience of nature. When he needs a break, this is what he does. He comes to this park at ungodly hours of the night, and basks in the world around him.

He wasn't the only one either who found the ambience appealing. There were always a few stragglers nestling in to savour a minute of peace from their busy lives before the park closed. If Isagi listens close enough, he can hear their breathing, their steps, their fidgeting... The sound of their hands rubbing together to fight the bitter cold.

He's always been able to hear more than he should. Isagi remembers vaguely how one day, his parents had asked how he knew it was them walking up to him, coming to pick him up from the playground before he'd seemingly even noticed them. It was because he had heard their heartbeats edging closer on foot. Everyone has a specific beat; a certain metronome. His mom's is soft, pure. That of a fawn. A chipper, sweet thumping. And his dad's, a colder bass that echoed just barely throughout his body and met the ground he walked on. Slower than molasses.

He also remembers the strange look they both gave him after he answered. And the knowing look they traded between themselves. If Isagi hadn't known better at the time, he would've thought nothing of it. But he knew what they were thinking. He knew the things, the concerns they hadn't said out loud but instead traveled silently in the air amongst their gazes.

Isagi has never been so nervous. He stayed silent and immoveable on that car ride home that day. He'd locked himself in his room and curled underneath a blanket, squeezing his eyes shut and hoping for something he still had yet to recieve entirely.

                      Humanity.

A pitter-pattering from beyond himself reaches into his mind and yanks him right out of it. Isagi's head levels on his shoulders, and then swivels to his right. There, making haste straight toward him, was an elderly man, a wooden cain scuffed with time in his knoby fingers. He smelled of chalky peppermints and malt chocolate, but Isagi wouldn't let that pleasant scent decieve him. Such a thing had never mirrored this man's aura. Isagi knew that too well.

First, his mouth opens, recognizing the park owner, Hirohito Takahashi, but nothing escapes except a strained gasp when the business end of the man's cain meets his abdomen. Isagi deflates immediately, hands going toward his stomach. His midnight eyes narrow when they meet Takahashi's face, but it's nothing compared to his own steely scowl.

"You filthy scoundrel. Do you have no shame? Making an old man come all the way out here in the cold to tell you to get your [censored] out of my park again. You know what time it is?" He says gruffly.

Isagi sighs, his face softening. Takahashi had a point. That still didn't mean he had to knock the breath out of him. Isagi's sure he'll have a big, ugly bruise by morning. Seriously, how did such an old guy stay so stout?

"Takahashi-san, I really didn't mean to stay so long. I'm sor-"

"It's 11:00 PM, you [censored]!" Takahashi waves his cane in Isagi's face, who presses himself further into the bench. "Eleven PM. I close this park at 10:00! Ten! It's on the damn sign, child! Are you deaf and oblivious? I come get you three nights out of the damn week and tell you the same damn thing!"

"Really, I'm sorry. I just got distracted and I hadn't looked at my phone in a while to check the time. I promise it won't happen aga-"

"Yeah, yeah. That's what you say everytime, so I don't believe you. If you're really sorry, I won't find you again an hour past closing time in my park. Now get your [censored] out of here before I call your parents." Takahashi grumbles, turning the opposite direction and stepping away to leave.

At the mention of his parents, Isagi eyes crinkle with resentment. He's known Takahashi for as long as he can remember, so Isagi knows he's not bluffing. He'd give Iyo and Issei a call just to spite him. He's honestly surprised he's gotten away with it this long.

That old croak and his parents befriended eachother before Isagi had ever been a thought in anyone's head. Only god knows why, though.. What the hell did they see in him? A perpetual grump with seemingly no sunny side to show. Why did Takahashi and his parents have to know each other? Isagi wishes they didn't.

He pushes himself up off of the bench, firmly planting his boots on the icy pavement. Carefully, he takes his next steps, cautious of slipping. Isagi really doesn't feel like adding more bruises on top of the one Takahashi's already given him.

                      "Hey!"

Isagi turns his head to look over his shoulder. An eyebrow raises on his head curiously. Though, he expects another scolding. Takahashi's face has lost it's sneer, but not it's usual scowl. He's staring at him through the newly stretched distance between them. His front is turned Isagi's direction again, and once he's sure he's gotten his attention, he asks him a question.

                      "What do you see?"

"I... what?" Isagi takes a few short glances at his surroundings, "Trees? Some frost... and gra-"

"Not that, ya idiot!" Takahashi's eyes roll so far back into his head that Isagi wonders if he had seen his own brain. "When you're all leaned back with your head in the clouds, like I find you everytime. What is it that you see?"

Isagi presses his tongue against his teeth, deep in thought. How does he answer a question like that?

                      "Why?" He asks.

A peculiar expression crosses Takahashi's face. One that Isagi finds familiar, but he can't quite place his finger on.

He feels like he's thought about it recently.

Takahashi's tone hardens. His gaze begins to unsettle him.

"You look like a predator when you do it. Stop. People will start noticing."

A frigid wind blows past Isagi's face. The park owner steadies his hand on his hat to make sure that it doesn't get carried away as he walks off without a care in the world about what he'd just said.

                      You look like a predator.

Isagi swallows slowly, hands tightening into anxious fists.

                      You look like a predator.

What the hell was that supposed to mean?

Had his parents told him something? About it... No, they wouldn't.

Had he really just said that unironically?

Isagi hoped not. He hoped his parents had told him, and that Takahashi was just trying to help him. Though, that didn't make it any less worse.

Takahashi, whether he's been told or not, thinks he looks predatory.

                      People will start noticing.

                      Noticing what?

Maybe Isagi should've asked him in return.

                      What had Takahashi seen?

Isagi breathes in and out more times than he count. Slow, heavy, throat-stinging breaths. He does it to ground himself; to help himself properly process. To give himself a semblance of doubt. Vampires don't breathe, after all. They don't have to, at least. If he very much does have to, especially with the way his deep breaths are gradually turning into hyperventilating at the moment, then that means he isn't one, right?

His hands rise quickly to his neck. The panic starts to settle in his bones in a harrowed way and then in his veins. Suddenly, it begins boiling behind his face. Then Isagi's knees hit the ground. His chest tightens as he silently begs the panic to subside. He doesn't want to do this in a park where people could come look at him. Could come observe the predator like they do in zoos.

The cold air hurts to pull in, but he can't stop. It's like he can't get enough air; like his airways are too tight. Isagi's eyes begin to water as he presses his forehead to the freezing pavement, and his strangled gasps become more like heaving sobs. Tears spill down his cheeks, drop, spread, and then turn to ice within minutes when they hit the ground. He purses and then bites down onto his lips, trying to imbue his fear into something so he can take control of it; force himself to be calm.

Isagi lays like that for a while with his eyes closed, waiting for his heart to steady itself. His hold begins to loosen on his jacket one finger at a time. His hands were now sore from how strong his grip was. Then he raises his head and swipes a dampened lock of hair away from his brow so he can see.

His mouth feels gross and pasty, saliva made sticky and dry. Isagi's eyes sting in their sockets.

Finally, he lifts himself up off of the sidewalk. The movement makes him aware of how hard he'd really dropped once his knees complain. He checks his pants, slapping at the few crumbs of organic matter that clung to them. Thankfully, they had just gotten wet, and hadn't been damaged. Though, being wet in this weather was still quite unpleasant.

All the park's lamps had gone dim. Only the light of the faraway road barely peered through the tree limbs to where Isagi was. It was useless. He couldn't see well at all.

God, that was embarrassing. I hope no one was watching.

Isagi wraps his arms stiffly around his ribcage, squeezing his forearms through his winter gloves. He sighs one more time tonight.

                      Isagi opens his eyes.

The walk home hadn't been that pleasant yesterday. By the time he'd made it back home and had quietly tiptoed back to his room, his arms had felt pretty much ready to fall off. Isagi could've sworn that his lips were nearly frozen shut with the condensation from his own breath. He had been stupid to check the weather on his phone and only wear pants and a light jacket in response to it. Very stupid. He doesn't recall a time before where he's ever been more thankful for a new change of clothes and heat in his less-than-average seventeen years.

Isagi shivers just at the memory of it. Maybe sneaking out to go to a park when it was supposed to be way below freezing to calm himself down hadn't been a good idea after all. He should've just gotten in the shower instead. He despises sleeping with wet hair, though. And the hairdryer would've obviously woken his parents up. A lose lose kind of deal.

A hearty yawn slips by his wide open jaws. Isagi covers it with a hand out of habit. Thankfully, the temperature transition had put him to sleep quickly. He didn't have to lay for hours, waiting for rest to find him, nothing to entertain him but the blackness behind his eyelids. Isagi sighs. His body ached quite a bit. He tired himself out last night trying to get home as fast as the wind and snow that was soaring by him. Before he even puts them into motion, he can already tell that his legs are going to hurt.

When he swings them past the edge of his mattress, his calves seem to ignite, proving his assumption. Isagi growls quietly.

                      Well, that was just amazing.

At least it had been worth it, though. He'd rather feel a little pain than spend more seconds literally freezing to death.

As Isagi attempts to stretch, his eyes travel to his alarm clock.

                      Huh.

                      Weird.

He'd woken up over thirty minutes before his alarm was scheduled.

Isagi was definitely not one to wake up early unless it was for a good purpose. In fact, he typically slept a little late. Sometimes even ten to twenty minutes late. He always made it to school on time despite it, so his parents had never scolded him for it. However, he knows it's probably a bad habit that he should change. Perhaps this was just his subconscious trying to edge him on.

                      Although, that really wasn't likely.

Why had he woken up so early?

Isagi begins to think up a list of reasons. Jots them down one by one onto an imaginary sheet of paper in his head. He scans each thoroughly, evaluating their plausibility while his thumb and finger pinch his chin.

It could've just been that he slept really well, so he felt more up to waking up on time.

Now that he's thinking about it, though, there's this small anxiety in him. It's been swelling subconsciously since he woke up. Isagi continues to read through his list until he sees a reason all the way at the bottom. It's scrawled in nearly unintelligible red-ink. Oh. He thinks he knows why now.

He always wakes up early on the day of. How had Isagi forgotten?

He had a very important football match today.

Isagi's focus directs back to his aching body.

                      "Ah, shit." He sighs.

Now it wasn't worth it. He had already been nervous enough about his play not being up to parr. This match was their key to nationals. And they were up against a formidable opponent. And he was Ichinan's ace.

He just had to go and disable himself, didn't he?

"Whatever." Isagi rolls his eyes. "I'll be fine. As long as I have the team."

Little did he know how much that wasn't going to matter soon.

Isagi gently pushes himself up off his bed. Then he takes a deep breath through his nose. There's a faint smell cuddling him. It's the scent of fresh breakfast seeping into his room from downstairs. It is both hunger-enticing and comforting, and it easily brings a smile to his lips. Isagi always enjoyed mornings, where his mom and dad would both get up early enough to cook a meal together. The meals were usually his mother's favorite dishes, since that was primarily what his dad wanted to learn to cook. Isagi had to admit that he wasn't that great at it, but the generosity and love for Iyo still had to count for something.

When he comes outside into the hallway, the aroma hits Isagi harder. Like a welcoming ocean wave. He stares down at the livingroom with a yearning. He's starving, but he can't breach the stairs yet. He has to go brush his teeth first and comb the lopsided mess on top of his head first. His stomach has to resist the food calling out to him so he can do basic hygiene. So, he goes to the bathroom.

He checks his abdomen, expecting to see a dark purple circle where Takahashi had bludgeoned him yesterday. Lo and behold, there it was, smack-dab in the middle of his stomach. It was less purple and a little more blue and red than he'd thought it would be. It hurt, but only when he pressed on it. Isagi then drops his shirt, resuming his normal routine.

When he's confident that his teeth are free from germs, and that his hair is presentable enough, he leaves. Then he takes his time getting down the hallway, favoring his sore legs. On the way, his eyes stop on something.

                      His half-brother's door.

Loud stickers and posters litter it's surface. Many were of bands and horror movies. Others were of profanities that Isagi was surprised his mom would allow. Though, perhaps she just didn't know. They were in english, afterall. Past the door, though Isagi never set foot in there unless he had to, the inside was much the same. Norue had an affinity for goth and punk cultures and aesthetics. He had red lightbulbs installed and a collection of expensive guitars and amps. Black and red nearly consumed everything and wires from various electronics covered the floors. There were other things besides that that Isagi could name.

He'd just rather stop thinking about what was inside that room.

Isagi's legs lead him downstairs automatically. A bit faster than before. His teeth clench and his hands start to clam up. He can feel that same anxious tingle in his nape and lower back. The one that slowly expands into his throat. Then his face. Then his chest. But Isagi chokes it down before that can happen. Last time, he made a mistake and let it grow. He won't do that again. Especially at home.

Isagi finally crosses the bottom step. Then he meets his parents in the kitchen. They're sat at the dining table a few feet away. Issei sees him first, and his mother follows suit, turning in her chair to greet him. They both have warm smiles on their faces. Seeing it returns Isagi to his previously brighter mood. Not completely, though. He's still upset about his aches and pains.

"Yoichi." His father gives him a nod. "You're up rather early. Good morning."

                      Isagi shrugs. "Yeah. Good morning."

His mother finishes a bite of her rice, and then lifts her cup of coffee to her lips.

"You're always in such a hurry on most mornings, so you don't usually get to eat with us when breakfast is fresh." Iyo says while setting her coffee back on the table. "You should come sit down, Yo-chan."

Isagi tilts his head, pretending to contemplate the offer. His mother plays along, mock-waiting for his decision. Then he hums in agreement and quickly walks over to a cabinet. He grabs a plate and then a utensil. On the stovetop sat a steaming pot of white rice. Beside it was another, shorter pot containing a mouth-watering, brown curry of beef and perfectly softened veggies. Just the way Isagi liked it. Loved it.

Tempted, Isagi takes up the stirring spoon in his hand and sneakily shovels in a mouthful of it. At first, the warmth meets his expectations. Then he tastes it.

Isagi presses his tongue to the roof of his mouth before he transitions into a coughing fit. His eyes start to water and he thumps a fist against his chest. Suddenly, Isagi feels extremely hot.

Both of his parent's heads snap toward him in half-a-second of bewilderment. It morphs into concern just as fast. Iyo pushes her chair out to cross the room, but his dad appears beside him with his hand at Isagi's back faster than if lightning struck.

"Are you alright, son? You shouldn't eat so carelessly-"

Iyo has made her way to them now, and she places a gentle hand on Issei's shoulder.

"I don't think he choked, dear..." His mother says quite sheepishly.

Issei shares her gaze for a moment. If Isagi looked close enough, he could see the gears starting up in his head through the glass of his eyes. His brows knit together to form a perplexed expression. Then Iyo gestures toward the actual culprit sitting hot on the stove, and his perplexity becomes guilt. He looks at Isagi with the deepest of unspoken apologies written in his body.

Said teen still has a few small coughs forcing their way out. And his skin hasn't resumed its original alabaster.

"It was... too spicy." Isagi strains. "What did you put in there? It felt like fire hit the back of my throat-"

"I'm so sorry, Yo. I must've overseasoned it. Oh, goodness." He shakes his head at himself and sighs. "I really thought I had gotten a hang of it by now-"

Iyo laughs softly while Isagi shrugs.

"It's fine, Dad. I think I just need some water is all." He replies and begins to move, but, almost magically, a cold glass is instantly shoved into his unassuming hands by his very evidently regretful father. "Oh, thank you-"

"No, it's the least I can do." He insists.

Iyo's hand raises to her nape sheepishly. "I tasted the curry when you weren't looking, and I knew I couldn't make myself eat it. I didn't tell you because I wanted to be nice, so I just didn't get any and settled for some soy sauce on my rice instead."

Issei then looks down at the rice on her plate, noticing that it was only faintly tinted brown, and somehow looks sorrier than before. He almost guiltily melts. "I guess it proves itself to be difficult to learn how to cook when you don't eat what you're cooking."

Isagi's throat eventually calms, and he takes a seat beside his mom at the table with his own portion of soy sauced rice. Issei retakes his seat across from them. His and Iyo's elbows rub every once in a while as they eat. Talk about several random topics arises. From vehicles to boots to vegetables. His parents carry out easy conversation like they always do. Isagi usually doesn't listen in, mind off somewhere else unless they mention him or his brother.

He finds himself staring at the empty spot on the tabletop where a plate would be. That is, if his dad ate regular food like him and mom did. He tries to pry his gaze away from there multiple times because he knows where his train of thought will go. But the attempt is futile.

Isagi swallows. There's a pause in his eating. Is there even a second in a day that goes by where he doesn't think about it? Constantly, he wonders if he'll end up like that. Cold. Undead, but nearly lifeless. Feeding off the warmth inside others.

He can't help it. That thought eats at him. It eats at him similar in the way he's scarfing down his rice now. He savors every morsel. Maybe because it helps him relax. Helps him to not think about it. The hunger within him being soothed at the response of regular food in his stomach comforts him. Just like the breathing. The need for oxygen in his lungs. An effective coping mechanism.

His dad seems to notice him staring.

"Is something wrong, Yo?" He says.

Isagi snaps out of his stupor, eyes pulling away from the table and towards Issei.

"Oh, no." He says, looking back down at his own plate to see that his rice is almost gone, "I just got lost in thought. Sorry."

Iyo puts a reassuring pat on his shoulder. Isagi sends a grateful smile her direction.

After they're done eating, Issei gathers their dishes for them and places them carefully in the sink. Iyo takes the time to thank him before she softly pushes him away from the water he had just turned on. His dad complains, but she insists that she'll wash them when she gets home from work. When they both disappear down the hall, Isagi sits for a bit before he does the same. Isagi trudges to his room to grab his school bag and change into his uniform. Then back to his bathroom to put a few things up in their places after he'd messed with them getting ready.

Amafu, the family dog, seems to swivel around his every step, waiting impatiently for his own breakfast and sticking his wet nose against Isagi's thigh when he could. Isagi chuckles, scratching the top of his fluffy head. Amafu huffs, excitedly smacking his legs with his rather sizeable tail as Isagi follows him to the kitchen pantry. Paying attention to the dog instead of what's in front of him, he goes to reach for the door handle before Amafu suddenly barks at him. He stops, startled, but realizes that something seems to be blocking his way.

                      Norue.

Isagi's pulls his hand back as if he'd been burned.

His brother is leaning against the pantry door, hands in the pockets of his fancy leather jacket. He looks down at him with that calculatingly horrifying stare. The one where his deep pits of blackend ash for eyes see directly into his head and look for his fear. Split him open and leave him out to dry. Isagi takes a careful step backward, but he doesn't give Norue the satisfaction of him breaking his gaze. Instead, he clears his throat and stands his ground.

"I need something. Can you move?"

The most sickening smile is carved into his face. It twists his stomach into knots.

"C'mon. No good morning? Not even an hello?" He laughs mockingly, and then his expressions flattens. "You seem awful nervous. Your heart's beating faster than I could get to you right now, and you reek of fear."

Isagi's eyes narrow with hatred as he bites the inside of his cheek. "Move, Norue. I don't have time for this."

The man sighs heavily, as if moving were a taxing task for him. "Fine."

Norue moves, but only just enough to provide Isagi access to the pantry. He continues to stare at him as he pulls Amafu's food out from behind a few things, like the broom and dustpan. Isagi can feel his gaze crawl up and down his spine, noting every single flick of his wrists. He hates it when he does this. Norue watches him purposefully. To make him scared. To make him feel preyed on. Because Norue knows how uncomfortable it makes him. He's always liked to torture Isagi. A sadistic [censored] he is.

Isagi pours Amafu's kibble into his bowl, and then he refreshes his water. He puts a few ice cubes in from the dispenser on the fridge because he knows Amafu loves them. Then he gestures for him to come over and eat. The dog walks toward it, but he doesn't look as happy as before. He laps the water closest to the ice, and seems to wait for Norue to finally leave before he lets his guard down again. The weight in Isagi's chest lifts with relief. He looks at Amafu, and then pets his soft back. He wonders if he can sense Norue's ill-will, since he's always seemed weary of him.

Isagi bids Amafu a farewell while he's still eye-level with him, even though he knows he doesn't understand what he's saying. Then he adjusts the backpack straps on his shoulders after he stands up. He walks out of the kitchen and to the front door in the foyer, and heads out after yelling a quick goodbye throughout the house. He doesn't leave the door open long enough to know whether anyone heard him or not. Isagi would rather leave quickly before his brother comes back out of hiding to terrorize him on his way to school like he's done in the past.

He sighs as he walks to the nearest stop for public transportation. Today was going less than great, and his aching body wasn't going to make the rest of it better.
