Why are ppl STILL using generative AI

Going to have to agree with the post. Generative AI is horrible. Period. I'm definitely one of those super anti-AI people. I genuinely don't get why- with ALL of the reasoning as to why it harms our environment- people still use it. Generative AI uses up our water, destroys our environment, and with way more AI data centers sprouting up, towns are getting exploited out of their electricity and clean water (not to mention noise pollution?). This hurts people, this hurts animals, and this hurts the earth. My mother is one of those people, and she doesn't care whenever she uses AI. She uses it to ask questions, to get recipes for about anything, and all of the other colors under the sun. At this point, Google doesn't exist anymore to her. It's a type of ignorance that is overly abundant in my country that shows up in subjects outside of generative AI. Oh, do you need to generate art because you can't draw? Pick up a pencil like the rest of us. Do you need to find a quick recipe for pie or home-made dinners? Look up recipes on GOOGLE. Having trouble finding good templates for your profile, resume, websites? Go look up free templates or work with someone who has knowledge/experience. And even then, we have tools like Photoshop, Google, Pinterest, etc. etc. There will always be a second option that you can choose, and it's one that most would heavily recommend. I would recommend it. People have started to rely too much on AI when we've had perfectly good alternatives, and as a result it's destroying our planet at an even faster rate.

@Araghie Well then what do you suggest we do then? I mean unless someone creates a site without using AI that could give us summarized answers which would be perfect for the Human Attention span but for now I guess there's nothing we could do

my mother uses AI for everything now, she doesn't posses basic problem solving skills now and asks Gemini for help with literally everything you could imagine.

she is also one IQ point away from disability and has ADHD, so I know people might call me ablesit for even remotely pointing it out but she doesn't need to use AI, if she needs help she should ask others for it instead of a machine.

she has become dependent on AI for everyday life and basic tasks and it's like she can't think about anything anymore. she used to be able to think for herself and stuff but now she's gotten worse.

she struggles to understand simple concepts and think about outcomes of basic tasks. i know she has difficulty's with things like ADHD and the one IQ point away from disability but still, starting a few months ago she started using the thing every day, everytime I see her doing something it's with an AI companion and it's sad.

she didn't struggle this much prior to using AI for everything. like, now if she was faced with a simple delema like what to eat that day, or what to dress in and was forced to solve these tasks with AI she would struggle to do it.

she will do things like play a game and have Gemini decide what move to make and it's just pathetic.

I don't like my mom, but I don't think I fear her or have any respect for her atp. (if you were wondering why I don't, abuse. just that one word. I'm not gonna elaborate)

it's funny how I used to find her scary when I was younger but now she's just some pathetic woman who can't do basic tasks without Gemini. like, I feel like my mom should be a cautonary tale as to why you really shouldn't ever use a chat bot for everything.

@w1ckedsticky1983 if I google something, I might use the info in the AI summery but I also click the links the info is from to fact check it so I don't like, spout misinformation or buy an item that isn't what I think it is, ect. like, let's say I wanted to talk about the debate on hottopic's clothing being weirdly misized or people being upset about hot topic not having enough plus sizes and clothing only going up to a 3 or 4 XL, I wouldn't just use the AI response bc they are usually not 100% true or they are made-up. i'd use info from the actual hot topic website and sizing chart and look at things like reddit to get an idea of people's opinions on the matter.
