@_Izzy_ I think Thats a really god example bc now some of the more conservative Japanese population (obv Japan is just conservative in general I DONT want nobody dick riding in my replies) is embarrassed to have kimonos be a cultural thing now so I feel like it shows that sexualization can ruin pride in indentity

The fetishization of representation -
The fetishization of representation@_Izzy_ yeah I agree with your first point completely. I think a lot of people in the replies misunderstood what we meant and assumed we were saying sexualization itself is bad, which isn’t really the argument.
Sexualization and fetishization are two different things.
Sexualization just means a character is portrayed as attractive or sensual. That can exist in media and still leave room for the character to be respected as an actual person in the story. If it fits the character and isn’t the only thing people see in them, most people don’t really mind it.
Fetishization is different because the character’s identity becomes the fantasy. Instead of people appreciating their writing, themes, or role in the story, their race, sexuality, or minority status becomes the thing people fixate on. That’s when it stops being appreciation and starts feeling objectifying.
That’s more what I was talking about in my post. You’ll see characters or interpretations get ignored, mocked, or rejected at first, but the moment sexualized fanart or edits start circulating, suddenly people start “liking” them. When the acceptance only comes once the character can be fantasized about, it kind of reveals what the attention is really about.
And like you said, racial minorities like black women tend to experience this the most. When the only time people loudly support or hype something is when it can be turned into a fantasy, it can feel less like representation and more like being reduced to a trope.
So yeah, the point wasn’t “characters can’t be attractive or sexualized.” It was just pointing out that there’s a difference between appreciating a character and only valuing them once they become something people can fetishize.

The fetishization of representation@_Izzy_ I don’t even feel it’s that hard and doesn’t even need to be anything crazy, just acknowledgment and not “people will be people” bc that removes accountability and takes away from the fact that it’s an actual issue
-
The fetishization of representation@_Izzy_ people have gotten too comfortable with the “we have gone so far” mindset bc they believe that there’s minimal room for improvement and Thats far from the truth
-
The fetishization of representation@_Izzy_ it died didn’t ruin my day but its uninspired to just say “Thats just the way it is” bc Thats WHY so much issues are still here today

-
you don't hate feminism, you just hate sexist women.@_Izzy_ I haven’t seen anybody talk abt it online as well bc it’s a huge issue
-
you don't hate feminism, you just hate sexist women.@_Izzy_ I agree but it’s just kinda annoying to see the same bs online when theres much more important issues

-
The fetishization of representation@_Izzy_ ur the one that came in with “it’s bc it’s not ur smile” and I responded also nobody gaf abt ts anyway

-
you don't hate feminism, you just hate sexist women.@Yanderemenhera subzero take, most normal people would agree and it doesn’t bring anything to the table tbh,not to be excessive but most have this idea already
-
you don't hate feminism, you just hate sexist women.@_Izzy_ I feel like feminism lost its meaning completely when it wasn't about equality and became a conversation on gender roles bc enforcing strict gender roles is exactly the opposite of what it aimed to do
-
you don't hate feminism, you just hate sexist women.@_Izzy_ for real,it’s annoying that it’s seen as empowering

-
you don't hate feminism, you just hate sexist women.@Yanderemenhera I don’t see women rejecting feminism it’s always exclusively men,I’ve seen a rise in “feminism” with the idea that men are to be hated
-
you don't hate feminism, you just hate sexist women.@_Izzy_ I think bro feminism is corny bc it’s just obnoxious “kill all men” women who say corny shit about assassinating men to put down their oppressor, womanism should be the ideas that people should want to reclaim bc it doesn’t have that association and is just objectively a more logical belief system bc a white woman and black woman are not at the same level of oppression
