Are you Aphantasiac or Hyperphantasiac?

[Luana.vasper]

For those who don't know, aphantasiac and hyperphantasiac are the opposite ends of the same spectrum. The spectrum is how well you can picture things in your head. Aphantasia is where one cannot picture or visualize anything in their head, while Hyperphantasia is where one can very vividly picture and visualize things in their head.

I am mostly aphantasiac. People like me, based on testing, are the minority. What are you?

[TH4TTR4N5F3M_VA]

aphantasiac 100%

[Noctis]

@Luana.vasper I can picture things in my head and also if I heard a song before I can listen to it in my head

[Luana.vasper]

@Innocent I can hear songs in my head. I just can only see blurry blobs at best.

[Luana.vasper]

@TH4T0N3TR4N5F3M How are your experiences with aphantasia? Do you think primarily in internal monologue?

[TH4TTR4N5F3M_VA]

@Luana.vasper no normaly i dont think i just do. got me into some shit tbh

[Luana.vasper]

@TH4T0N3TR4N5F3M Lmao, so no voice or anything?

[TH4TTR4N5F3M_VA]

@Luana.vasper i hear a voice but only when im off the anti-depressants

[Luana.vasper]

I would describe my way of thinking as a computer that you can put information into, but it is disconnected from the screen. I can go back and pull that information up in my head at anytime. It's just there (unless I forget ofc, which I'm prone to bcs nothing really makes a lasting impact on me unless it's smth emotionally traumatizing or frustrating). I have an internal monologue and have sound-based thoughts. I can kind of visualize things very poorly, but it's very mentally taxing, so there's no point in me doing it.

[Luana.vasper]

@TH4T0N3TR4N5F3M How do you recieve your thoughts, then?

[Yanderemenhera]

@Luana.vasper I have dreams and can hallucinate but I can't "see" anything without being in an altered mental state so to speak. I only hear my voice. there's nothing else. every second feels like a new reality, my memories are fuzzy, kinda like if someone told you something vs you actually living it out. something from 5 minutes ago, 5 months ago and 10 years ago feels like the same thing, I lack an actual sense of time as well basically. it's not a black void in my head, it's like trying to see out of your elbow, aka, there's literally nothing.

it's been like this my entire life though I think my sense of time and memory did worsen after some blows to the head (those blows wern't recent btw, i'm good)

[Luana.vasper]

@Yanderemenhera I relate to this a lot. My dreams look like the scenes in the flash movies where he uses his power. It's not fast, it just looks like that. All the objects are smeared have the texture of... mashed potatoes or refried beans? A mess of identifiable blobs of color. t's strange because if you showed me my dreams on TV screen or something, I would have absolutely no idea what was happening, but when I'm dreaming, I know exactly what's happening. I guess it's because it's my brain that's coming up with it in the first place, so of course it would be identifiable.

[JadeF1re]

i think im more hyperphantastic, i can make images in my head n stuff sorta vividly

[redwater_bottle]

Hyperphantasia 100% because I can conjure an apple, throw it through timelines, make dazai eat it-

[Nonbinary_wolf]

aphantasiac

[Luana.vasper]

@redwater_bottle I wish I could do this, bro. Writing would be so much easier.

[Jujub_811]

Hyperphantasia

[Laner2018]

Woah, hyperphantasia mention. I gotta agree that im definitely a Hyperphantasiac because I naturally have like a stronger connection to how I hear or perceive music, it’s hard to explain but I literally play whole movies in my mind lmao it’s wild, and music is an experience for me rather than background noise. I honestly had no idea what hyperphantasia was up until a few months ago.

[Luana.vasper]

@Laner2018 That's crazy to me. I can vividly hear songs in my head, and I can come up with scenarios, but I can never see anything. No movies, lol. Just sound and information.
